Bert Thomas Carl, 93, of Versailles, Kentucky passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026, at his home in Versailles, Kentucky. He was born on March 18, 1933, in Bath County, to the late Bert Carl and Lorena Bryant Carl.

 Bert’s journey was shaped by his heartfelt commitment to serving his country during the Korean War as a member of the Marines. After his military service, he continued to dedicate himself to his craft as a blacksmith.

Beyond his professional life, Bert nurtured a deep connection to the land and its bounty. Farming, tending to tobacco, and raising cattle and horses were more than hobbies; they were integral parts of his identity and sources of profound satisfaction. His love of rural life and agricultural pursuits reflected a steadfast dedication to tradition and to the rhythms of nature.

Bert is survived by his daughters, Stina Wishman (Bruce) of Jonesburg, Missouri, and Leah Carl of Rolla, Missouri. His four grandchildren, Cody Smith, Luke Wishman (Megan), Ben Wishman (Brittany), and Zach Smith (Alexis) and his four great-grandchildren, Chancellor Ryan Smith, Brady Owen Wishman, Ashton Eli Wishman, and Audrey Rae Wishman. Numerous nieces and nephews also cherish his memory.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wives, Ailene Johnson Carl and Carolyn Crockett. He was also predeceased by his three brothers, Gene Carl, Pete Carl, and James "Shorty" Carl, as well as seven sisters: Grace Howard, Minnie Harville, Clara Garrard, Dorothy Groves, Maymie Jackson, Nancy Fannin, and Mary Stewart. Their memories remain intertwined with his in the hearts of those who knew him.

A graveside service to honor Bert’s memory will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Crown Hill Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Kentucky with Rev. Lowell Rice officiating and full military honors being performed by American Legion Post 22. 

The Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Owingsville is caring for all the arrangements for Bert Carl.
