James Watson Thomas

James Watson Thomas, known affectionately as "Watson," passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family at the age of 86. He was born in Suddith, Kentucky to the late Ed Thomas and Ethel Mullins Thomas.  He dedicated his professional life to the electrical industry, retiring as a Group Leader from Square D in Lexington, where his leadership and commitment were highly regarded.

A proud veteran, Watson served in the United States Air Force, exemplifying the dedication and discipline that defined his character. His comradeship extended into his personal life, where he shared a love of the outdoors, enjoying hobbies such as hunting, mowing the lawn, and walking. He was a passionate fan of the UK Wildcats, and he was known for being a friendly traveler, cherishing visits with friends and family. He was also a proud member of the Grace Gospel Church. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bonnie Lou Sparks Thomas, as well as two sisters, Bessie Norris and Mary Nettie Smith, and one brother, William Thomas.

Watson is survived by his daughter, Vickie Thomas Evans (Lee) of Owingsville, and two grandchildren, T.J. Evans (Jessamyn) of Lexington and Kyle "Matt" Matthew Evans of Owingsville. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Liam and Aedyn. Among his family members is his sister-in-law, Kay Thomas, and several nieces and nephews: Linda Anderson (Charles), Beverly Schirmer (Larry), Sandy Harvey (Terry), Loretta Conkright (Tim), Tyrone Smith, and John Norris.

Visitation services will be held at the Michael R Gray Funeral Home in Owingsville on June 13, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will take place the following day Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 11:00 AM, with Brother Steve Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at the Owingsville Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Terry Harvey, Cody Anderson, Dale Sparks, Clifton Sparks, Roger Sparks and Chuckie Rogers. 

Honorary pallbearers include the Hovermale and Parks family. 

The Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Owingsville is caring for all the arrangements for Watson Thomas.
