Margaret Metz

Margaret Catherine Metz, of Owingsville, passed away July 6, 2013 at the Windsor Care Center in Mt. Sterling. She had been a resident there since April 4, 2004.

She was born in Cannelton, IN, May 11, 1921. She graduated from Cannelton High School and worked for an attorney, and at a local bank.

Metz married Russell Louis Metz of Tell City, IN who began his journalism career at the Salem Democrat, Salem, IN. Realizing the newspaper business was his life-long desire, he began searching for a small weekly newspaper to purchase. He found the Bath County News-Outlook for sale in 1960 and made arrangements to purchase it from Paul Lewis, the publisher and talented local artist and sign painter. The Metz's operated the Bath County News-Outlook with her husband serving as publisher and Margaret serving as assistant publisher. During the nearly 50 years of their ownership, the paper won over 500 state and national awards for newspaper excellence.

Russ passed away in 1996 following a very successful career as a hometown publisher and nationally-renown column writer.

Margaret C. Metz is survived by two children, Jerri Highley and the late Wayne Highley, and Ken Metz and Gloria Metz; seven grandchildren, Mike Young of Winchester, Ronda Bailey of Winchester and Jamie Hardin of Owingsville, Alicia Sexton and Kevin Winburn of Owingsville, Ashley Metz of Lexington, Chasity Metz of Owingsville, Zak Metz and Lenzie McCarty of Owingsville; 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Owingsville Woman's Club, Owingsville/Bath County Chamber of Commerce, member of the Kentucky Weekly Newspaper Association, the Kentucky Press Association and the Owingsville United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2013 at the Richie Hunt Funeral Home with the funeral services held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 13, 2013. Bob Ray and Rev. Lowell Rice officiating. Burial will follow in the Owingsville Cemetery.
