Marvin Calvert, 83, died on Sunday, May 19.
He was retired from the Kentucky Department of Highways with 45 years of service. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who gave his entire life to loving his family.
Marvin was a lifelong member of the Sharpsburg Christian Church, serving as a deacon and elder since he was 18 years of age.
He leaves behind Sue, his wife of 63 years, two children, Steve Alan (Corazon) Calvert of Sharpsburg and Margaret Ann (Michael) Terry of Lexington, one grandson, Bradley Steven (Ann) Calvert and one great-grandson, Alexander Bradley Calvert, all of Brentwood, TN. He is also survived by three sisters, Betty Vice of Lexington, Norma Hart of Mt. Sterling and Carolyn Rogers of Sharpsburg, 9 nieces and nephews and many great friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Owens and Bettie Calvert, his brother, John Calvert and his nephew, Chuck Hart.
Marvin most enjoyed his family and his farm, frequently combining the two by taking his grandson and great-grandson on tractor rides around the Just-A-Mere Farm property to check out how the hay was growing. Nearly every morning, he headed to town to see what the other men were up to, because in a small town, that’s what one needs to do to stay on top of the news. He loved his garden and took great pride in seeing to it that everything grew up right, just as he did with his children. Mostly he loved Sue, and she loved him back in a fierce way that can only come from a true love developed over decades of trial and triumph. While not always the most vocal, he showed us that actions do, in fact, speak louder than words and we are all better for it.
Many thanks to the very special caregivers who have taken care of Dad in the past few months. It would have been impossible to live the quality of life he did without them.
