Freddie "Fred" Stone

Freddie Dale “Fred” Stone, 74, of Owingsville, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021.

He was born on February 20, 1947 in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, a son of the late Howard and Lucy Shields Stone.

Fred was a retired agent for Eastern Airlines.  He was also a farmer and had been a plant nursery owner.

He was a United States Army Veteran having served during Vietnam, where he was in the artillery and a fire direction control specialist.  Fred was the recipient of the Bronze Star for his honor and valor.

Fred was a graduate of Bath County High School and Morehead State University.  He did graduate work in botany and horticulture at the University of Kentucky and he received a building degree at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida.

He was active in the Camellia Society in Gainesville, Florida, where he taught grafting techniques; the Buchholz High School Wrestling Team and the Gainesville YMCA Swim Team.

Fred had been an avid golfer and he enjoyed planting flowers, the outdoors, his church, socializing and spending time with this family, especially his grandkids.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Marvin “Bud” Stone (May), Quinn Stone and Wick Stone and two sisters, Freda Stone Palmer and Margaret Stone and brother-in-law, Paul Collins.

Survivors include his wife, Dinah Metcalf Stone, two sons, John Howard Stone (Avital) of Silver Spring, Maryland and Michael David Stone (Rebecca Andrews) of Houston, Texas, daughter-in-law, Mandi Stone of Fort Mill, South Carolina, two brothers, Phillip Stone (Joan) of Louisville, Kentucky and Doug Stone (Mary) of Owingsville, one sister, Sue Stone Collins of Owingsville, sister-in-law, Dottie Stone of Versailles, Kentucky, brother-in-law, Craig Palmer of Chattanooga, Tennessee and nine grandchildren, Danny Stone Andrews of Rome, Georgia; Lily Stone, Molly Stone, Heidi Stone, Jack Stone and Israel Stone all of Fort Mill, South Carolina; Emory Stone of Houston, Texas and Yarden Stone and Ma’yaan Stone both of Silver Spring, Maryland.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, October 24, 2021 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Owingsville with Rev. Chris Bailey and Brother Justin Perkins officiating.

Burial with military rights performed by American Legion Post 22 will follow in the Shields Cemetery.

Visitation is from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be David Allen Collins, Howard David Stone, Kenny Stone, Quinn Stone, Abraham Palmer and Adam Palmer.

Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons & the Men’s Brotherhood at the Owingsville Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested “Fred’s Bed Memorial Garden” at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church, 18300 Upper Bay Road, Houston, TX  77058 or to the Owingsville Baptist Church, 92 Coyle Street, Owingsville, KY  40360.
